Aragan

Name: Aragan

Pseudonyms:

Age:

Race: Human

Appearance:

Further Info: A recurring minor character, noted for appearing in a wide variety of roles within the Malazan Empire, especially its military. Frequently suffers from headaches.

Unlike most nobleborn Malazans, Aragan joined the Imperial military as a regular soldier rather than purchasing a commission as an officer. As a soldier, he participated in the conquest of Seven Cities, most likely as a member of the Malazan 3rd Army. When the Malazan 3rd Army was recalled to Malaz City in 1154, shortly after the Battle of Y'Ghatan, it was assigned the task of culling Malaz City of any illegal magic users, following new laws made by Surly, the Imperial Regent. Aragan, now a Sergeant, lead a squad of new recruits in the culling of magic-users throughout the Mouse Quarter, including a verbal confrontation with Agayla.

Two years later, Aragan was appointed to act as a dignitary in developing relations with the Moranth on Genebackis. Working alongside High Mage Tayschrenn and Onos T'oolan, their success resulted in an alliance with the Moranth which began in 1156.

By 1161, Aragan was now a Staff Sergeant, recruiting soldiers for the Empire along the Kanese coast, including the Cotillion-posessed Sorry.

By 1164, Aragan had been promoted to the rank of Captain and command of the Guard at Mock's Hold in Malaz City. He was interrogated by Kalam Mekhar on the night the former Bridgeburner attempted to assassinate the Empress and Aragan complained that he was only days away from a new posting.

Weeks later, Aragan arrived in the former Pannion city of Black Coral on the morning following its conquest by Onearm's Host and its allies. Aragan's role was to serve as either Ambassador or Military Governor depending on the outcome of the battle.

Upon the return of the Malazan 14th Army to Malaz City in 1165, Aragan has been promoted to Fist and assigned to the command position at Mock's Hold. Fist Aragan spends the eventful night in Coop's Hanged Man Inn contending with a headache which redoubles in intensity upon the arrival of Apsalar.

It is to be noted that Aragan's headaches often seem to occur when in the presence of powerful individuals, such as Apsalar.  It has been suggested that these headaches are a sign of some magical sensitivity on his part.

"This soldier drew off his gauntlets and slapped them against his cloak. Rust-red dust puffed from the cloth. Ochre dust! The very sands of Seven Cities still caked to the man's cloak? The veteran and Agayla eyed one another. After a moment he spat to one side, muttered, 'We've five cadre mages with us if push comes to shove, you know.'...The one who'd been shoved aside raised his sword. 'But Aragan this is one of 'em..."

"There had been rumours of contact and extensive negotiations with a strange people ruling a place called Cloud Forest, far to the south.

[...]

The Malazan negotiators had included Tayschrenn, some nobleborn dignitary named Aragan, and a lone T'lan Imass named Onos T'oolan."

"Aragan scowled down at the writing tablet and waited until the corporal cleared his throat. Then he looked up.

The recruit standing before him took the staff sergeant aback..."

- Sorry signs up

" 'You can do better than that Captain. . .?'

The man scowled. 'Aragan. And here I am only days away from a new posting. . .'"

"An auspicious guest had holed up in Coop's this night. Fist Aragan, who'd taken the cramped booth farthest from the door, in the darkest corner, where he sat alone, nursing a tankard of ale as bell after bell tolled outside, amidst a distant and sometimes not-so-cistant chorus of riotous mayhem.

He was not alone in looking up, then holding his gaze fixed in admiration for the unknown black-haired Kanese woman who walked in moments before dawn.

[...]

He'd been battling a headache since dusk, and he's thought it beaten - but suddenly the pounding in his skull returned, redoubled in intensity, and a small groan escaped him."
